In 1994, Marilyn Medlock Fratangelo, in seeking the Lord’s will for her life was given a vision for a home for neglected, abused or abandoned children.   She began research on group children’s home.  After her retirement in 2000 she began to share the vision with others and formed a board of directors. On April 1, 2002 The Moriah Christian Children’s Home incorporated as a Christian, non-denominational home.  It is an IRS approved 501 (c) 3 not for profit charitable organization.    A board of directors manages the corporation and is responsible for raising funds for operation and maintenance.

The name Moriah is from Genesis 22:14 “So Abraham called that place the Lord will provide and to this day it is said on the Mountain of the Lord it will be provided. (NIV).

In September 2002 ground breaking ceremony.    Mrs. Fratangelo donated the forty-acre farm, Dutton , Alabama where her Grandparents, Jim and Emma Medlock had raised her father, Bill Medlock and his 10 siblings.

The Moriah Closet Thrift Store was opened in Scottsboro in June 2002 and a second one opened in Section in March 2003. The Scottsboro store was closed in March 2006 and the Section store was moved to Dutton in May 2004.  Profits from the stores helped to build the home and now go into the homes operational budget.

Construction began in March 2004 while fund raising continued to complete the house. The house was brought to the “dried in stage” by a contractor with remainder of the work done mostly by volunteer labor.  The house was completed and an informal open house held in December 2005.

In June 2006, the board of directors began recruiting for staff for the home.

By May 2007 all the staff required to operate the home was hired – a Director, Social Worker, full time house parents and 2 couples for relief house parents.

May 9, 2007, the application for a license to operate a group home for neglected, abused or abandoned girls ages 6 to 18 was submitted to the State of Alabama, Department of Human Resources (SDHR).

March 5, 2008 State DHR inspected the home.

March 7, 2008 License Granted.
